Hungary as a destination for international students is becoming more popular by the day because it’s affordable, it gives a multicultural enviroment for students, and it is the home of some iconic landscapes and buildings. Students from countries like Romania, Slovakia, France, Spain, and Italy are particularly drawn to Hungary.

You are also very likely to be classmates with students from Mongolia, Ecuador, or India once admitted into a Hungarian university. So, if you have the mind of experiencing higher education ‘the Hungarian way’, here is a guide to put you through.

Requirements to Study in Hungary

There are some basic admission requirements that all applying students must meet and this depends on the degree level.

For a Bachelor’s degree

* High school diploma
* High school transcript of records
* Pass in an entrance exam (only for some programmes)

For a Master’s degree

* Bachelor’s diploma (a four-year undergraduate degree is required if you apply for a one-year Master’s)
* University transcript of records
* Evidence that your Bachelor’s degree is in line with the Master’s studies you are applying for.

For a PhD degree

*University degree which is equivalent to a Master’s degree — ideally a *Master of Arts (M.A.) or a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree
*Evidence of prior professional experience (only for some programmes)

Language requirements

If you are pursuing an English-speaking programme in Hungary, it’s either you provide a language certificate such as IELTS or TOEFL, or you take an entrance exam in language skills.

For Bachelor’s degrees

5.0 – 6.0 for the IELTS Academic test
60 – 80 for the TOEFL iBT test

For Master’s degrees

5.5 – 6.5 for IELTS Academic
70 – 90 for TOEFL iBT

In Hungary, some study programmes are taught in German. If you go for such a degree, you will have to provide a German language certificate.

How to apply.

Choose your university and programme*

There are 66 higher education institutions in Hungary to choose from, of which 9 are part of the global education ranking. Some of the popular universities to foreign students in Hungary and their typical destinations — are:

Central European University (CEU)
University of Debrecen
International Business School
Budapest Metropolitan University

Normally, the study programme you choose should depend on your skills, your previous studies, and where you wish to head your career. But if you are not sure or have different graduate programmes in mind, then it’s important you know the following options.

Masters in Business Administration
Masters in Computer Science
Masters in Environmental Sciences
Masters in International Relations

Check entry requirements and deadlines*

The moment you have made a choice of the particular academic programme which you want to apply for, also do well to check the specific application documents and submit them before the application deadlines. the basic documents you will be needing are:

*An up-to-date CV
*Copy of your passport or ID card
*Proof of language proficiency (English, German or Hungarian depending on the language the programme is taught in)
*Certified English translations of transcripts of records
*Certified English translation of your diplomas
*Listing two academic referees or including two reference letters
*A letter of motivation

Other possible specific application requirements you may need could be:

*An academic paper (especially for Social Sciences and Humanities degrees)
*A competitive GMAT or GRE score (for STEM degrees)
*An entrance exam (mostly for Bachelor’s studies)
*A face-to-face or Skype interview (mostly for Master’s studies)

NOTE: The application deadlines varies according to university, but the most common are:

For the autumn semester: 15th of February
For the spring semester: 15th of November

To ensure that, check with the university you have chosen because these dates varies most times especially for English-taught programmes.

Apply online and pay the application fee *

All the required documents can be uploaded online on the page of your chosen study programme. To ensure you have all the need documents, you can contact the university and ask what else should be done.
Please note that universities in Hungary application fee costs between 100 and 150 EUR.

Wait to receive confirmation from the university*

You will be notified by e-mail or post when you are accepted and you will be given details about the next steps. You will be asked to make a part payment of the tuition fee before your enrolment.

The average tuition fees at Hungarian universities for non-EU/EEA students ranges between 2,000-5,000 EUR/year. Private universities can cost higher.

Get your student visa for Hungary*

Incase you are not from an EU/EEA country, you will need a visa to study in Hungary. You can apply for the visa after you have been accepted by the university to your chosen programme. The general visa application documents are:

*University tuition fee receipt
*University acceptance letter
*Your passport should be valid at least 6 months after the entry day
*Proof of health insurance
*Proof of accommodation in Hungary
*Proof that you have the funds to cover living expenses during your studies
*Visa application form

When you get to the country, you will need to apply for your residence permit within 15 days. This is necessary even if you are an EU/EEA resident.
